In 2003 UNESCO proclaimed 'Le carnaval traditionnel de Binche' as a masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. A Bit Outside The Centre is a documentary observation on the Wallonian tradition: 'Les Gilles de Binche'.

synopsis

This film documents the story of some of the Carnival de Binche's most loyal actors in a few bars situated in and around the city which, for decades, have been the meeting places for the different folkloristic societies in the town. The main character is an Italian ex-miner called Pepi Campanella who, after 20 years of service in the mines, decided to take over the bar 'Local des Marins' 37 years ago.
Un peu écarté du centre est un documentaire observatoire sur une tradition wallonne : les Gilles de Binche. En 2003, le carnaval traditionnel de Binche a été reconnu par l’UNESCO comme une pièce incontournable de l’oralité et de l'intangible héritage de l’humanité. A la recherche des codes derrières cette fête, le film documente l’histoire de la plupart de ses acteurs les plus loyaux dans quelques bars situés dans les alentours de la ville. Les bars servent de place de rencontre pour les différentes sociétés folkloriques de la ville de Binche. Le personnage principal est l’ancien mineur Pepi Campanella qui, après 20 ans de travail dans les mines, a décidé de reprendre le bar des « Marins locaux » il y a 37 ans. C’est un film sur une tradition complexe, la survie du folklore et les conséquences de très fortes ambitions pour conserver cette tradition.
