synopsis

A Sea Change takes its audience to the IBIS maritime boarding school in Ostende. In buildings that look out towards the sea, boys from six to 16 sleep, eat and play. They learn how to read the sea, sail with a fishing boat and help haul in the catch. In the classrooms, the impetuous sea is captured in maps. On sea maps, there are no storms and there is no time: the sea might seem timeless, but much is changing. The coast is permeated with nostalgia, as if the sea had turned its face to the past. Sooner or later the fishing fleet will disappear, together with many endangered species of fish. The fish auction hall in Ostende is in decay, the harbour coated in rust. Nonetheless, a new colour is appearing from beneath the peeling paint....
Een idee van de zee speelt zich af in het maritiem internaat IBIS in Oostende. In de gebouwen die uitzicht geven op de zee slapen, eten en spelen jongens tussen zes en 16 jaar. Ze leren om naar de zee te kijken, gaan mee op een vissersboot en helpen de vis binnen te halen. Terwijl de vissers aan het werk zijn, bekijken ze de bijvangst en staren naar de horizon. In de les leggen ze de onstuimige zee vast op kaarten, waar geen stormen en tijd bestaan. Maar hoewel de zee tijdloos lijkt, is er veel aan het veranderen. De kust lijkt doordrongen van nostalgie, alsof de zee haar gezicht naar het verleden heeft gekeerd. De visserij zal vroeg of laat verdwijnen, samen met de vele bedreigde vispopulaties. De vismijn in Oostende is vervallen, de haven is verroest, maar onder de afbladderende verf komt een nieuwe kleur tevoorschijn.
