Le magasin d’antiquités que possède Gérard devrait l’aider à se débarrasser de ses problèmes financiers. Il rêve d’écrire le plus grand roman hollandais de tous les temps. Malheureusement, l’argent lui file entre les doigts. En conséquence, il est constamment sur la paille. Sa sœur Ingrid est mariée à Pierre. Elle veut un enfant, mais il refuse. Alors que Gérard s’apprête à mener une vie normale, un souhait exprimé principalement par ses parents, le mariage d’Ingrid se brise.
