The 500-year-old book 'Utopia' takes us on a journey through today's world. What starts as a quest for an original medieval print stolen by the Naples Mafia in 2012 in turns into a quest for the meaning of the book. In a unique blend of fiction and documentary, Back to Utopia tells the story of journalist Alex Dillen and his professor Panludic... A story about past choices and future decisions.
Het 500 jaar oude boek 'Utopia' neemt ons mee op een confronterende tocht door de wereld van vandaag. Beklijvende hedendaagse documentaireverhalen brengen de visionaire ideeën uit het oude boek terug tot leven. Het verhaal begint echter met de verdwijning van een 500 jaar oud exemplaar van 'Utopia' in de grootste maffiaboekendiefstal uit de geschiedenis.
Onderzoeksjournalist Alex Dillen tracht het gestolen boek, dat in 2011 in Napels verdween, op het spoor te komen. Een reeks geheimzinnige brieven van zijn overleden professor begeleiden hem op zijn ontdekkingstocht. Wat Alex niet weet dat deze brieven hem zullen confronteren met zijn keuzes uit z'n journalistieke verleden. Zijn professor dwingt hem op zoek te gaan naar de werkelijke betekenis van 'Utopia' in nederzettingen van illegale goudzoekers rondom de Madre-de-Dios rivier in Peru, het Lacandon-woud in Mexico, de savannegemeenschappen van Oeganda, de geëvacueerde dorpen rond Fukushima en in de haven van Lampedusa. Alex ondekt er de menselijke verhalen achter zijn artikels, die hij niet mocht, of niet wilde zien.
Back to Utopia brengt het verhaal van 'Utopia', niet als een droom, maar als een gedeelde droom. "Utopia is not a state it is a state of mind."
