synopsis

In 2005, after lengthy negotiations, an agreement was concluded between Belgium and the Netherlands concerning the Western Scheldt. The river would be deepened so that the largest sea-faring vessels could now reach Antwerp, and at the same time the natural world in the area would be restored. Nine years later the agreement has still not been honoured by the Dutch and an unprecedented battle of opinions and counter-opinions about the restoration project continues to rage.
In 2005 tekenen Nederland en België een verdrag over de uitdieping van de Westerschelde, zodat ook de grootste zeeschepen de haven van Antwerpen kunnen bereiken en tegelijkertijd de natuur hersteld wordt. Tien jaar en tientallen rapporten later is het akkoord aan Nederlandse zijde nog steeds niet uitgevoerd. Er is een ongekend heftige richting en strijd ontstaan over dat natuurherstel, waarin de Zeeuwse Hedwigepolder centraal is komen te staan. Ministers spraken zich afwisselend uit voor of tegen het onder water laten lopen van de polder. Onder de oppervlakte laat zien hoe één polder de inzet werd van een politiek spel waarbij emoties en sentiment het beleid zijn gaan bepalen.
