synopsis

Bile is an introspective essay on the notion of the human body as political metaphor. Layer-by-layer the film digs down in order to find answers to the proposed questions: what is body, what is illness, and finally, what is death? A journey through the history of medical imaging and a reflection on the recent death of the director's mother in the decor of post-Soviet Russia. Getting under the skin of the viewer, the film attempts to comprehend the complex subject of corporeality.
De documentaire is een formule om duivels te bezweren. We kijken weg van ziekte, sterfelijkheid en dood. Precies die negatie is des duivels. Vrolijke vitaliteit wordt scherts en leugen als van het tegendeel wordt weggekeken. De ziekte en dood van de moeder van de filmmaakster in het post-Sovjet-Rusland geven de beschouwing zijn kern. Precies deze intieme blik laat de kijker toe zichzelf te zien. De titel komt van het oud Grieks voor melancholie: ‘melas cholè’. Dit melancholisch ‘kijken naar’ brengt ons noodzakelijk bij beeldvorming. Net als de geschiedenis van de geneeskunde ook die van de (medische) beeldvorming is, reflecteert de film over ‘hoe in beeld brengen’, hoe ‘verbeelden’.
