synopsis

Ceres is a poetic yet realistic documentary that follows four children as they experience the natural cycle of life on a farm. Each child lives on a remote farm in the southwest of the Netherlands and is learning the profession of their ancestors from a young age. They each dream that one day they will take over the farms of their father or grandfather. Although this dream is never doubted, as they reach the early years of puberty the outside world begins to intrude on their universe. As the seasons go by, crops are sown and harvested and animals are born and slaughtered. The children are confronted with the volatility of nature, the threat of extreme weather conditions and the cycle of life and death.
Ceres is een poëtische documentaire film over vier jonge kinderen die de oogstcyclus en de kringloop van leven en dood elk op hun eigen manier ervaren. De kinderen wonen op afgelegen Zeeuwse boerderijen en dromen ervan om later boer te worden, net als hun vaders en grootvaders. Hoewel deze droom nooit in twijfel wordt getrokken, bereiken de kinderen een leeftijd waarop verleidingen van buitenaf hun isolement binnendringen en hun onvoorwaardelijke idealen kunnen beïnvloeden. Opgroeien op een afgelegen boerderij, de vooropgestelde droom om later boer of boerin te worden, het belang van familiebedrijven die generatie op generatie worden doorgegeven, afhankelijkheid van de natuur en het weer, de kringloop van de seizoenen, van zaaien en oogsten en van ter wereld brengen en slachten, vormen de kern van hun verhalen. Ceres is niet enkel een film over leven op een boerderij, de film brengt ook een verhaal over dromen, isolatie en opgroeien. Het is een intiem portret van vier kinderen dat de wereld verkent door hun ogen en kijkt naar hun relatie met mens en natuur.
