New York’s legendary Chelsea Hotel is being transformed into a luxury hotel. Caught between its mythical past and their uncertain future, the hotel’s last residents try to reinvent themselves.

synopsis

The Chelsea Hotel was an icon of 1960s counterculture and a haven for famous artists and intellectuals, including Patti Smith, Janis Joplin, Sid Vicious and the superstars of Warhol's factory. But now it is being renovated, and will soon reopen as one of New York's most fashionable luxury hotels. Fifty-one long-time residents continue to live and create in the midst of the building work, caught between fear of the future, weariness and excitement. The film meanders through the hotel, examining its living body, and exploring the traces of the past, searching for the unique spirit that forged and perpetuates its myth.
Le légendaire Chelsea Hotel, pilier de la contre-culture des années '60 et refuge d’artistes et d’intellectuels célèbres dont Patti Smith, Janis Joplin, Sid Vicious et les superstars de la Factory de Warhol, est en cours de rénovation. Bientôt il ré-ouvrira ses portes au public et deviendra l'un des hôtels de luxe les plus en vogue de New York. 51 résidents, pensionnaires de longue date, y habitent toujours. Entre peur de l’avenir, lassitude, et excitation, ils continuent de vivre et créer au milieu des travaux. Dans ce quotidien en chantier, le film parcours le corps de l’hôtel et en explore les survivances du passé, à la recherche de son esprit unique qui a forgé et perpétue son mythe.
Het legendarische Chelsea Hotel, een icoon van de tegencultuur van de jaren '60 en toevluchtsoord voor beroemde kunstenaars en intellectuelen zoals Patti Smith, Janis Joplin, Sid Vicious en de supersterren van Warhols Factory, wordt gerenoveerd. Binnenkort gaat het weer open voor het publiek als een van de meest modieuze luxehotels van New York. Tussen angst voor de toekomst, vermoeidheid en opwinding leven en creëren nog steeds 51 overgebleven bewoners te midden van de renovatiewerken. In dit alledaagse leven onder constructie, dwaalt de film door de meanders van het hotel en verkent de sporen van het verleden, op zoek naar de unieke geest die de mythe heeft gevormd en in stand houdt.
