synopsis

What is the value of images as objective testimonies of a conflict? Can we believe what we see? In her new work, Sarah Vanagt turns her attention to an important chapter in recent European history: the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague. She examines obstacles to reconstructing a war that is nevertheless well documented, starting starts from a simple movement of the hand - a pencil being rubbed on a sheet of paper placed over an object - and adapts this process to the courtroom, attempting to decipher the secret language formed by the traces of war.
Quelle est la valeur des images en tant que témoignages objectifs d’un conflit ? Pouvons-nous croire ce que nous voyons ? Dans sa nouvelle création, Sarah Vanagt se penche sur un chapitre important de l’histoire européenne récente : le Tribunal pénal international de La Haye pour l’ex-Yougoslavie. L’artiste examine les obstacles à la reconstitution d’une guerre pourtant bien documentée. Elle est partie d’un simple mouvement de la main : le frottement d’un crayon sur une feuille de papier placée sur un objet. Elle a adapté ce processus « révélateur » du frottage à la salle de tribunal. Le film Élevage de poussière / Dust Breeding est un compte rendu pénétrant de son exploration. Mesurant la distance entre les faits, les preuves matérielles de ces faits, les images qui les représentent et l’interprétation de celles-ci, elle tente de déchiffrer la langue secrète formée par les traces de guerre. Aiguisant son oeil jusqu’à le transformer en lentille de microscope, Vanagt dévoile un paysage de détails qui nous invite à regarder autrement.
Hoe waardevol zijn beelden als getuigen van een conflict? Kunnen we de beelden die we zien ook vertrouwen? Spreken zij de waarheid, vormen zij een bewijs? In Élevage de poussière / Dust Breeding stelt filmmaker Sarah Vanagt vragen bij een van de meest pijnlijke hoofdstukken uit de recente Europese geschiedenis: de oorlog in het voormalige Joegoslavië. Het Joegoslaviëtribunaal in Den Haag heeft de gruwelijkheden ervan haarfijn gedocumenteerd. Maar wat tonen deze beelden en wat brengen ze tot uitdrukking? Sarah Vanagt vertrekt van een eenvoudige handbeweging: een potlood over een stuk papier op een voorwerp. Dit proces van frottage in de rechtszaal in Den Haag leidt tot een verslag dat peilt naar feiten en herinneringen, naar de beelden die zij oproepen, naar de materiële bewijzen van het geweld en naar de interpretatie van dit alles. Élevage de poussière / Dust Breeding is een filmisch verslag met een haast microscopische blik op wat details zijn en op de beelden die zich achter andere beelden verschuilen. Het resultaat vraagt een andere manier van kijken. Een poging om de verborgen taal van oorlogssporen te ontcijferen.
