East Shore is a short documentary portrait of Marnix Verleene, a fisherman in Ostend. The film takes place both on shore and at sea, sketching an image of the fishing district through a poetic glance at Marnix's life. The East Shore is the neighbourhood in which fishermen dwell: they weave nets, play cards and kill time. Now, this district is being demolished: high, white, residential blocks are rising up instead. East Shore reflects this fragmented composition in its form: on shore, Marnix's life is enacted in scenes by him and his co-workers; at sea we look more indirectly, through shadows, silhouettes and reflections at how life goes on.
Oosteroever est un portrait court et documentaire sur Marnix Verleene, un pe_cheur à Ostende. Le film se situe à la fois en mer et à terre, et décrit une image du quartier Oosteroever à travers un regard poétique sur la vie de Marnix. C’est le quartier à Ostende où les pêcheurs demeurent : ils tissent leurs filets de pêche, ils jouent aux cartes et ils s’ennuient. À présent ce quartier est en état de démolition : de grands bâtiments blancs d’habitation sont en construction. Oosteroever reflète cet assemblage fragmenté dans sa forme : à terre, la vie de Marnix est jouée par lui-même et ses confrères ; en mer, on regarde plus indirect, à travers des ombres, des silhouettes et des réflexions à comment la vie continue.
Oosteroever is een kort documentaire portret van Marnix Verleene, een visser in Oostende. De film speelt zich af aan wal en op zee en schetst een beeld van de verdwijnende vissersbuurt, via een poëtische blik op Marnix’ leven. De Oosteroever is de buurt waarin de vissers netten vlechten, kaarten en de tijd doden. Die omgeving wordt nu gesloopt: er worden hoge, witte woonblokken in de plaats gebouwd. Oosteroever reflecteert die gefragmenteerde assemblage in haar vorm: aan wal krijgt Marnix’ leven vorm in scènes waarin hij en de zijnen zichzelf vertolken; op zee kijken we indirecter, via schaduwen en reflecties, naar hoe het leven – ook daar – steeds doorgaat.
