synopsis

The artist and filmmaker Nicolas Provost travelled across four western states of the US, encountering monumental landscapes of immense cinematic beauty. Without dialogue or an explicit narrative, he presents his sophisticated compositions in the form of a slideshow of tranquil situations that invite the viewer to look closely. Sometimes we can identify signs of life in the vast landscapes: people wearing caps and taking photographs; a small group of deer; a car with a sign on it reading 'Oversized Load'. Provost zooms in on the landscapes as the humans in them gaze around in amazement: the people on a bench, a woman waving, a couple standing arm in arm. Even the dogs face in the same direction, apparently impressed by their surroundings. Sometimes we can only infer the presence of humans through the reservoirs or electricity pylons.
Kunstenaar en filmmaker Nicolas Provost reisde langs de westkant van de VS, een streek met monumentale landschappen met een grote cinematografische schoonheid. De landschappen legde hij vast in karakteristieke composities die vertoond worden in een opeenvolging van stille situaties, zonder dialoog of vertelling. Het videokunstwerk nodigt de kijker uit om van dichtbij te gaan kijken. Soms herkennen we in het stille landschap tekens van leven: figuren met petjes die foto’s nemen, een groepje herten, een auto waarop ‘Oversized Load’ staat. Provost focust op de landschappen terwijl de mensen in het tafereel bewonderend rondkijken: de figuren op de bank, een zwaaiende vrouw, een koppel arm in arm. Zelfs de honden kijken in dezelfde richting, schijnbaar onder de indruk van hun omgeving. Soms zijn er geen mensen te zien, maar hun aanwezigheid kan afgeleid worden uit de aanblik reservoirs of elektriciteitsmasten.
