Large parts of Goma were covered with lava after the eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano in January 2002. Today kids live in the ruins on the lava. They sell paper hankies to grown-ups in the city, and lava rocks to construction builders.

synopsis

Large parts of Goma were covered with lava after the eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano in January 2002. Today kids live in the ruins on the lava. They sell paper hankies to grown-ups in the city, and lava rocks to construction builders. Meanwhile, the kids are building their own city on top of the old one, a city complete with radios and tv's, white jeeps and blue helmets, presidents and vice-presidents, commercials and hate campaigns, cemeteries and election fever. The kids emerge from the lava, as it were, and reveal the world underneath the rubble.
Une grande partie de Goma fut couverte de lave après l’éruption du volcan Nyiragongo en janvier 2002. Aujourd’hui, des enfants vivent dans les ruines de la lave. Ils vendent des mouchoirs en papier aux adultes de la ville et des pierres de lave à des travailleurs dans la construction. Pendant ce temps, les enfants construisent leur propre ville au dessus de l’ancienne. Une ville à part entière avec des radios et télévisions, des jeep blanches et des casques bleus, des présidents et des vice-présidents, des publicités et des campagnes de haines, des cimetières et des élections. Les enfants émergent de la lave, et révèlent le monde en dessous des décombres.
