synopsis

After his son is attacked by a dog in the park, Martin's seemingly idyllic family is shaken. As the father, he can only look on helplessly, while his son records his impotence with a camcorder. A few days later, Martin runs into the dog's owner - the perfect opportunity to make amends for his previous feeble reaction. The owner turns out to be less compliant than expected and Martin has to give in. Things escalate and, all the while, the camcorder's presence is like the Sword of Damocles. When the Sword inevitably falls and Martin is faced with his own impotence, he decides to go after the dog. At any cost he has to push himself to the limit, even if this requires the shedding of blood. Will he succeed or will his act of heroism be sabotaged?
Wanneer zijn zoon in het park door een herdershond gebeten wordt, slaat de schijnbare harmonie van Maartens gezin helemaal om. Als vader kan hij slechts hulpeloos toekijken, terwijl zoonlief zijn onmacht met een camcorder registreert. Enkele dagen later komt Maarten per toeval de eigenaar van de hond tegen; de kans om zijn slappe reactie van in het park recht te zetten. De eigenaar blijkt minder makkelijk in te pakken dan gedacht en Maarten druipt onverrichter zaken af.
Later die dag onderneemt hij pogingen om werk te vinden, terwijl zijn vrouw onverminderd het gezin blijft runnen. Hij haalt het voorval met de eigenaar aan, maar geeft er zijn versie van; een shot dat uitdraait op een owngoal. Hij zet zijn nederlaag verder door tijdens een gezelschapsspel, onder het oog van bevriende koppels, het onderspit te delven tegenover zijn eigen vrouw. En al die tijd blijft de camcorder als een Zwaard van Damocles aanwezig…
Wanneer ’s nachts het Zwaard onvermijdelijk valt en Maarten zwart op wit geconfronteerd wordt met zijn onmacht, besluit hij op zoek te gaan naar de hond. Hij moet en zal zijn grenzen verleggen, ook al moet hij daarvoor bloed vergieten. Slaagt hij erin zijn zo gewenste verandering te realiseren, of wordt zijn heldentocht alsnog gesaboteerd? I Can Change neemt met gitzwarte humor de mannelijke illusie op de korrel en vraagt zich af wie vandaag de echte ‘herder’ is van het moderne gezin…
