synopsis

Juste un Mouvement is a free take on La Chinoise, the Jean-Luc Godard movie shot in 1967 in Paris. Reallocating its roles and characters 50 years later in Dakar and updating its plot, this new version offers a meditation on the relationship between politics, justice and memory. Although no longer alive, Omar Blondin Diop, the only actual Maoist student in the original movie, now becomes the key character.

Shot exclusively with non-professional actors including Diop’s brothers and friends, everyone in this film portrays themselves: a filmmaker, a rapper, a poet, a Chinese worker, a Shaolin master, a Senegalese intellectual, the Minister of Culture of Senegal and the Vice President of the People’s Republic of China.
« Omar est mort ! », s'écrie une voix à Dakar, le 11 mai 1973. L'aîné de la famille Blondin Diop, un jeune philosophe militant, le maoïste éloquent de La Chinoise de Jean-Luc Godard se serait suicidé dans sa cellule de l'île de Gorée. Sa famille et ses amis n'en croyaient pas un mot, exigeant que la lumière soit faite sur ce crime politique. Un spectre hante la capitale sénégalaise, elle-même en état de troubles.
"Omar is dood!", riep een stem in Dakar op 11 mei 1973. De oudste van de familie Blondin Diop, een jonge militante filosoof die als welbespraakte maoïst zichzelf speelt in La Chinoise van Jean-Luc Godard, had naar verluidt zelfmoord gepleegd in zijn gevangeniscel op het eiland Gorée. Zijn familie en vrienden geloofden er niets van en eisten dat er licht zou worden geworpen op deze politieke misdaad. Een spook waart rond in de Senegalese hoofdstad, zelf in staat van onrust.
