Portrait of a useless filmmaker est un anti-drame de 30 minutes. Le réalisateur Bertel Mertens remet tout en question dans sa vie. Pourquoi doit-il faire des documentaires ? Gagnera-t-il un jour une palme d’or ? Il essaie de trouver une réponse à la maison. Selon lui, il est question de « rendre l’inutile utile ».
