synopsis

A road movie about Flemish history in Wallonia, Promised Land tells the story of 500,000 Flemish people who escaped from the poverty of their Flanders homes in order to find a better life in the more prosperous and industrially developed region of Wallonia. Today, the situations are reversed.
Pascal Verbeken et Luckas Vander Taelen voyagent à travers la Wallonie, un ancien eldorado industriel, où des centaines de milliers de personnes pauvres issues de Flandre immigrèrent. L’ancienne Belgique, dont le centre de gravité de l’économie était situé en Wallonie, n’existe plus. La Flandre est devenue l’une des régions les plus riches et les mieux instruites d’Europe. Pour la région wallonne industrielle, les dernières décennies étaient impitoyables. Qu’est devenue la Wallonie, ancienne terre promise et troisième pouvoir industriel au monde, symbole de modernité et d’entrepreneuriat visionnaire ?
Pascal Verbeken en Luckas Vander Taelen reizen door de Waalse streken – ooit een industrieel eldorado - waarheen honderdduizenden vanuit arm Vlaanderen migreerden. Het oude België, waarvan het economisch zwaartepunt in Wallonië lag, bestaat niet meer. Vlaanderen is één van de rijkste, best opgeleide regio’s van Europa geworden. Voor de Waalse industriële regio’ s waren de voorbije decennia meedogenloos. Wat is er gebeurd met het beloofde land Wallonië dat ooit de derde industriële macht ter wereld was, een symbool van moderniteit en visionair ondernemerschap?
