Jacques doesn't show up, leaving his friend in the caring hands of a beautiful servant. When she disappears the next morning, Julien goes back to the station to return to Paris, not knowing if his friend is alive or dead.

France, Première Guerre mondiale. Julien reçoit une invitation à rencontrer son ami Jacques dans sa maison de campagne à Bray pendant ses jours de permission à l’armée. Mais Julien attend en vain. Jacques ne se montre pas, laissant son ami entre les mains chaleureuses d’une belle servante. Lorsqu’elle disparaît le matin suivant, Julien se rend à la gare pour retourner à Paris, sans savoir si son ami est vivant ou mort.
