synopsis

There's a treasure trove of information to be found in the poisonous e-waste in Ghana. It's a relatively simple matter to open up hard drives and gain access to photos and the personal details of their former owners. Equipped with a name and address, almost anybody can be found online. The film follows young mother Ama who tries to become an internet con artist but she doesn't appear to have much of a knack for it. She looks in astonishment at an American street that she has conjured up on Google and wonders if she will able to scam a man. One Dollar, on the other hand, knows how to use his fake account to drive men crazy: they fall for the photo of a buxom woman - and his high-pitched voice.

Tussen de giftig walmende e-waste in Ghana ligt een schat aan informatie. Op harde schijven staan betrekkelijk eenvoudig te achterhalen foto's en privégegevens van voormalige eigenaars. Met naam en adres is bijna iedereen online te vinden. De jonge moeder Ama kijkt vol verbazing naar een Amerikaanse straat die via Google Maps in een paar klikken tevoorschijn wordt getoverd. Zij is een van de internetoplichters die in deze film worden gevolgd.
Een doorgewinterde fraudeur probeert haar het vak te leren, maar veel talent lijkt ze er niet voor te hebben. Hij daarentegen weet mannen helemaal te gek te maken met zijn nepaccount. Ze trappen in de foto van een rondborstige vrouw en ook in zijn hoge stemmetje. Sakawa laat de oplichtpraktijken vanuit het perspectief van de Ghanezen zien. Dat roept vragen op zonder dat de film die expliciet hoeft te stellen. Want hoeveel mededogen kun je verwachten van iemand die wekelijks voor 250 euro vis voor zijn baas moest kopen, terwijl hijzelf maar 12 euro per maand verdiende?
