synopsis

When his father dies, filmmaker Dries Meddens begins to delve into his past. But the more he discovers, the less he can avoid the growing fear that his father's psychiatric illness is hereditary, from grandfather to father to son. Is the germ of manic depression in him? In his children? Through family archives, exchanges with a psychiatrist and his life as a stay-at-home dad, Dries searches for a way out of this possible genetic fatality.
A partir de l'histoire autobiographique du cinéaste Dries Meddens, Zaad évoque le regard que porte la société sur la maniaco-dépression. Lorsque son père décède, Dries commence à fouiller dans son passé. Mais plus il en découvre, moins il peut éviter la crainte croissante que la maladie psychiatrique paternelle ne soit héréditaire, du grand-père au père en passant par le fils. Le germe est-t-il en lui? Chez ses enfants? A travers les archives de familles, des échanges avec un psychiatre et sa vie de père au foyer, Dries cherche une issue à cette possible fatalité génétique.
Gebaseerd op het autobiografische verhaal van filmmaker Dries Meddens, stelt Zaad de maatschappelijke visie op manische depressie in vraag. Wanneer zijn vader overlijdt, begint Dries in zijn verleden te graven. Maar hoe meer hij ontdekt, hoe minder hij de groeiende angst kan vermijden dat de psychiatrische ziekte van zijn vader erfelijk is, van grootvader op vader op zoon. Zit de kiem ook in hem? En zijn kinderen? Via familiearchieven, gesprekken met een psychiater en zijn leven als thuisblijvende vader, zoekt Dries naar een uitweg uit deze mogelijke genetische fataliteit.
