synopsis

State of Happiness tells the story of four young people caught up in the 1970s oil boom, with all its novelties, opportunities, and frightening unknowns. How are they going to deal with it all? The second season stretches from 1977 to 1980: an era of disasters. Well 14 is blowing out and a massive sheet of oil spreads over the ocean. Environmental politics is on the agenda for the first time. Concern for human safety follows, when a hotel platform capsizes and 123 people die, trapped inside. This is also a time when people start to make money, some more than they can handle.
State of Happiness vertelt het verhaal van Westerse welvaart, een veranderende natie, een Klondike-stad en vier jonge mensen die in een wervelwind van mogelijkheden terechtkomen. Alles is in beweging, alles is nieuw, het is een grote, soms beangstigende, onbekende wereld. Hoe gaan ze daarmee om? Het tweede seizoen loopt van 1977 tot 1980. Het tijdperk van de grote rampen. Boorput 14 blaast op en een enorme olievlek besmeurt de oceaan. Milieupolitiek komt voor het eerst op de agenda. Veiligheidsbewustzijn volgt wanneer een hotelplatform kapseist en 123 mensen binnenin omkomen. Dit is ook het moment waarop mensen geld beginnen te verdienen, sommigen meer dan ze aankunnen.
