synopsis

Every year, thousands of South Koreans flock to one of the many stadiums in Seoul to watch the Pro League Competition of Starcraft, the most popular video game in the region, in which young professionals compete for the title of champion. The game itself, more than a decade old, is almost ancient in the fast-developing world of video games; but in South Korea it has become a national pastime. The players of the Starcraft Pro League are celebrities with a major cult following.
Chaque année, des milliers de Sud-Coréens affluent dans l’un des nombreux stades de jeux de Séoul pour regarder la Compétition Pro League de Starcraft, le jeu vidéo le plus populaire de la région. Pendant une saison complète, comparable à celle du football, de jeunes Sud-Coréens s’affrontent pour le titre de champion. Le jeu, vieux de plus de dix ans, est presque un ancêtre dans le monde en perpétuelle évolution du jeu vidéo, mais en Corée du Sud, il est devenu un passe-temps national. Les joueurs de la Starcraft Pro League sont des célébrités nationales qui participent à tous les niveaux de la culture populaire et on leur voue un culte. Comme les joueurs gagnent une fortune, être un joueur du Starcraft n’est pas seulement un bond dans une carrière, mais aussi un chemin vers la crédibilité et le respect dans la très compétitive société sud-coréenne.
