At the funeral repast of his father Louis, Brecht Bosmans is confronted with his own past: his youth in Oosterdonk, a village that no longer exists. Among the people and things Brecht recalls are his first love, Elza, and the man who taught him all he knows now, the village philosopher Pete the liar. Brecht also wonders why, just before he died, as his last wish, his father invited Jos Teugels to his funeral. It turns out, however, that Jos Teugels is impossible to track down ...
In de Antwerpse polders lag nog niet zo lang geleden Oosterdonk: een dorp van boeren en dokwerkers dat moest verdwijnen omdat de haven groeide en bleef groeien. De kleine Brecht wordt op sleeptouw genomen door Pietje De Leugenaar: de kruidendokter, tovenaar, filosoof en kluizenaar die in een nauw, soms magisch contact staat met de natuur. Deze zonderlinge figuur predikt met zijn sterke verhalen en parabels het verzet tegen de onteigeningen.

Terug naar Oosterdonk is een herinnering aan een verloren jeugd en het afscheid van het overzichtelijke,leven in een dorpsgemeenschap. Het leven van de jonge Brecht wordt op magisch-realistische manier geschetst tegen de achtergrond van een dreigende nieuwe tijd. Een unieke combinatie van mysterie, humor, romantiek en melancholie.
