synopsis

No stage, show or event was spared from Antoon's streaking: dressed-up in a tuxedo, he jumped on stage to receive applause from the audience. What started out as something funny and innocent became a life-changing obsession: addicted to the rush and trapped in a controversial media storm, Antoon completely lost it. His sudden death, five years ago, left a lot of questions unanswered. The Applause Man shines a new light on the life and story of this forgotten cult-celebrity and, at the same time, tells a universal story about passion.
Antoon De Pauw werd kortstondig een Vlaams cultfiguur in de jaren negentig. Bekend door zijn vele pogingen om applaus te stelen. Geen enkel podium, show of evenement was veilig voor Antoon De Pauw. Strak in het pak betrad hij ongevraagd de podia en nam het applaus van het publiek in ontvangst. Het doel van zijn acties was een mysterie. Was het een rebellie tegen de opkomende massamedia en talentenjachten van die tijd of was het gewoon een schreeuw om aandacht? Volgens sommigen was hij gewoon gek.
Maar wat leek op onschuldige acties, heeft Antoons leven drastisch veranderd. In de ban van een verslaving en een enorme mediastorm verloor hij zichzelf. Na zijn plotse dood, vijf jaar geleden, rijzen er vele vragen. De applausman geeft een heel nieuw beeld over het ware verhaal achter deze vergeten cultfiguur.
Een documentaire over applaus, over de impact van media, maar vooral over een intrigerend en gepassioneerd man met als finale vraag: is het beter jezelf te verliezen in je passie, dan de passie te verliezen?
