synopsis

The only resistance an old farmer meets comes from his son, a lively young fellow who has an easy-going nature but is less and less content to stand in his father's shadow and let his own development be held back. His father refuses to acknowledge that his strength is ebbing and the time has really come for him to abdicate. The latent conflict between both men comes to surface through a rather minor issue: the question when the flax is to be sown this year. For the first time the conflict explodes. At about the same time, the son falls in love with a young, fresh, lively milkmaid. An erotic, passionate love develops. It further enrages the old man and when he catches them at a dance one day, he uses this occasion as a pretext to cement his power by other means.
La seule résistance qu'un vieux fermier rencontre vient de son fils, un jeune homme brave qui a une nature sympathique mais est de moins en moins satisfait de vivre dans l'ombre de son père et de laisser son propre développement de côté. Son père refuse de reconnaître que sa force décline, et qu'il est temps pour lui de passer le flambeau. Le conflit latent entre les deux hommes monte à la surface lors d'une discussion plutôt anodine : La question de savoir quand le lin sera planté cette année. Pour la première fois, le conflit éclate. Au même moment, le fils tombe amoureux d'une jeune laitière fraîche et vivante. Un amour passionnel et érotique se développe. Cela enrage d'autant plus le vieil homme et, lorsqu'il les surprend un jour en train de danser, il prend cette événement comme un prétexte pour renforcer son pouvoir par d'autres moyens.
