synopsis

The one remaining male northern white rhino has armed bodyguards to protect him, tourists standing in line to take selfies, journalists rushing to Kenya to tell his story and scientists determined to find ways to reproduce his species. What is so attractive about the threat of extinction? How does this reflect on us?
Le 19 mars 2018, au Kenya, s’éteignait le dernier rhinocéros blanc du Nord mâle. On l’avait nommé Sudan. Les années qui ont précédé sa mort n’ont pas été solitaires. Des gardes armées veillaient sur lui jour et nuit, il était nourri et choyé par ses soigneurs attitrés. Du monde entier, des journalistes et des touristes sont venus le voir. Quant aux scientifiques, ils restent déterminés à ressusciter un jour l'espèce, grâce au sperme congelé pour 3.000 ans au moins dans des cuves d’azote en Europe. Pourquoi cet intérêt, cette émotion si vive autour d’une espèce en voie d'extinction imminente ? Et que nous dit cette histoire sur notre propre espèce ?
In 2018 overleed in Kenia de allerlaatste mannelijke noordelijke witte neushoorn op aarde. Zijn naam was Sudan en hij was niet alleen toen hij stierf. Hij werd liefdevol verzorgd door bevlogen verzorgers, 24 op 7 bewaakt door gewapende bodyguards, vele malen per dag vastgelegd door toeristen, filmploegen en fotografen van over de hele wereld. En tot vandaag zijn wetenschappers vastberaden om met innovatieve technieken zijn soort alsnog terug op de wereld te zetten. Wat is toch de aantrekkingskracht van de dreigende verdwijning van deze neushoornsoort? En wat zegt dat over onze eigen soort?
