A documentary which explores an alternative way of looking at economics, against the backdrop of the Port of Antwerp and Vincent Van Gogh's painting The Potato Eaters.

synopsis

The Potato Eaters is an alternative way of looking at economics, a pure and concentrated look at labour in response to the numerous existing quantitative studies. The Port of Antwerp at night and a series of letters by Vincent van Gogh combine in a poetic film that can be read as an interpretation of van Gogh's famous painting The Potato Eaters (1885). As the film does not consider processes of evolution or matters of efficiency, we come closer to the core of economy: human bodies at work and at rest, which are rarely seen in cinema in times of extensive dehumanised automation.
The Potato Eaters se présente comme une autre manière de regarder l'économie. Un regard pur et concentré sur le travail, en réponse aux nombreuses études quantitatives qui aujourd'hui, dominent les discours sur l'économie. Le Port d'Anvers, du jour au lendemain, et une série de lettres et de dessins de Vincent van Gogh, forment un film poétique, qui peut être lu comme une interprétation du célèbre tableau: Les mangeurs de pommes de terre (1885). Par le fait que le film ne fasse pas attention à l'efficacité ou au processus, on se rapproche de la base de l'économie: les corps bien vivant et en mouvement mais aussi au repos. Images que nous ressentons rarement au cinéma, dans les temps d'automatisation très avancée.
The Potato Eaters toont zich als een alternatieve manier om naar economie te kijken. Een puur en geconcentreerd staren naar arbeid, als antwoord op de talloze kwantitatieve studies die nu de dominerende discours over economie beheersen. De Haven van Antwerpen bij nacht, en een reeks brieven en tekeningen van Vincent van Gogh, maken samen een poëtische film, die gelezen kan worden als een interpretatie van het bekende schilderij: De Aardappeleters (1885). Omdat de film geen aandacht schenk aan efficiëntie of procesmatigheden, komen we dichter bij de kern van economie: Lichamen in beweging en in rust. Beelden die we nog zelden zien in cinema, in tijden van sterk doorgedreven automatisering.
