Marian Winters returns home from South America to attend her father's funeral. It is the first time in years that she sees her mother, sister, brother and Frits, an old friend of her father's and editor of the publication she worked on in South America. No one realises she has come home for good, even though she has no plans for the future. She also keeps from her relatives that she has married to Enrique to help him get a residence permit. As Enrique finds it hard to adapt to the Dutch way of life, he seeks contact but she is very evasive. Simply being married to Marian is not sufficient to entitle him to a permit. She strictly vetoes his request to share a flat with her. Most of her attention is absorbed by her mentally retarded brother who she feels has a right to a life of his own in a normal environment.

Revenant d'Amérique du Sud, Marian Winters retourne chez elle pour assister aux funérailles de son père. C'est la première fois depuis des années qu'elle revoit sa mère, sa s≈ìur, son frère et Frits, un vieil ami de son père et l'éditeur de la publication sur laquelle elle travaillait en Amérique du Sud. Personne ne se rend compte qu'elle est revenue pour de bon, même si elle n'a pas de plans pour l'avenir. Elle cache également à ses proches qu'elle a épousé Enrique pour l'aider à obtenir un permis de séjour. Alors qu'Enrique a des difficultés à s'adapter au style de vie Néerlandais, il cherche des contacts, mais elle reste très évasive. Etre simplement marié à Marian ne lui octroie pas le droit d'obtenir un permis. Elle refuse catégoriquement sa demande de partager un appartement avec elle. Elle consacre la majorité de son attention à son frère retardé mentalement, qui selon elle mérite une vie indépendante dans un environnement normal.
