Lorsque son fils rejoint le parti travailliste, Van Paemel, un fermier hâlé et travailleur est exclu de ses terres par le propriétaire local et forcé d’emménager dans un taudis pour démunis. Un autre de ses fils est blessé dans un accident de chasse et sa fille tombe enceinte du fils de l’un des propriétaires terriens.
