synopsis

The year is 1464 and England has been at war for nine years; a war between two sides of the same family, The House of York and The House of Lancaster, over who is the rightful King of England. We enter our story shortly after the young Edward IV of the House of York has come to the throne and deposed the unfit-to-rule Lancastrian Henry VI. The series dramatises the events of the ensuing 19 years - plots, betrayals, executions and battles - as the bloody power struggle for the throne of England shatters the lives of all it touches.
Deze tiendelige drama serie is gebaseerd op de boekenreeks 'Cousin’s War' van Philippa Gregory, bestseller auteur van onder andere ‘The Other Boleyn Girl’. Deze bestaat uit drie delen: 'The White Queen' uitgegeven in 2009 en 'The Red Queen' uitgegeven in 2010, beiden bestsellers in het Verenigd Koninkrijk en de Verenigde Staten. Het laatste deel 'The Kingmakers Daughter' wordt in de zomer van 2014 gepubliceerd.
Het jaar is 1464 en Engeland verkeert al negen jaar in oorlog. Er vindt een strijd plaats tussen The House of York en The House of Lancaster, die zal bepalen wie de rechtmatige koning van Engeland zal worden. Het verhaal begint nadat de jonge Edward IV van The House of York de troon opeist en hij Lancastriaanse Henry VI afzet wegens ongeschikt om te regeren.
Er is een voorkeur voor Edward als koning en hij grijpt de macht met de hulp van de Graaf van Warwick, één van de rijkste en machtigste mannen in Engeland. Edward lijkt vastberaden om de troon te behouden en vrede in het land te brengen. Wat er vervolgens gebeurt, het beginpunt in het verhaal, is de grootste politieke misstap van zijn leven en ook een belangrijk historisch moment. Edward wordt verliefd op Elizabeth Woodville en maakt haar koningin, tegen wens en advies in van zijn mentor de Graaf van Warwick. Daarbij veroorzaakt hij verdeling binnen de familie van The House of York en wakkert hij oude rivaliteit aan.
De serie dramatiseert gebeurtenissen van de negentien jaren die volgen; vol intriges, verraad, executies en gevechten, waar de levens van alle betrokkenen verwoest worden door de bloederige strijd om de troon.
