Anne is 33. She has Asperger’s and is visually impaired, a condition caused by her premature birth. As a result, she struggles to find her place in society and wants nothing more than to live as a mermaid. Her greatest challenge, however, is to live above water.

synopsis

A portrait of Anne, a young woman of 33 who has Asperger’s and is visually impaired, a condition caused by her premature birth. She wants nothing more than to live underwater as a mermaid, but her greatest challenge is to live above water. She is slowly trying to build a life together with her boyfriend, who looks remarkably like Prince Eric from The Little Mermaid. Then her mother discovers that Anne’s premature birth was caused by the drug DES, an artificial hormone prescribed to her grandmother in the 1960s. Under the Surface is a story about a seemingly impossible love that takes shape thanks to the female protagonist’s imagination and perseverance.
