On a Brussels street, day labourers are looking for a job. In small groups, they wait for hours hoping for someone to pick them up. When they are lucky, they get dropped off at a construction site or field; but employers pay small salaries and no social security is provided.

synopsis

In Waiting Working Hours, the voices of the workers are mixed with digital Google Street View images. Their testimonies, in a multitude of languages, form a constructed dialogue about labour, economics and life. In the immobile world of Google Street View, we are reminded of the standstill that the workers experience when they are waiting for hours. Together with the workers, Waiting Working Hours examines and questions their current situation, their thoughts on labour and their dreams for the future.
Dans une rue à Bruxelles, des travailleurs sont à la recherche d'emploi. Réunis en petits groupes, ils attendent pendant des heures en espérant que quelqu'un vienne les chercher. Quand ils ont de la chance, ils sont déposés sur un chantier de construction; mais les employeurs paient de petits salaires et aucune sécurité sociale n'est fournie. Dans Waiting Working Hours, les voix des travailleurs sont mélangées aux images numériques de Google Street View. Leurs témoignages, dans une multitude de langues, forment un dialogue structuré sur le travail, l'économie et la vie. Dans le monde immobile de Google Street View, nous nous souvenons de l’immobilité que vivent les travailleurs lorsqu'ils attendent pendant des heures. En collaboration avec les travailleurs, Waiting Working Hours examine et interroge leur situation actuelle, leurs réflexions sur le travail et leurs rêves pour l’avenir.
De Diksmuidelaan in Brussel is de plek waar dagloners zoeken naar een job. Verdeeld in kleine groepjes wachten ze soms urenlang tot een witte bestelwagen hen oppikt om te gaan werken op een bouwwerf of een akker. Werkgevers betalen weinig loon en geen sociale zekerheid. Met persoonlijke getuigenissen van deze werkers, van beschrijvingen over het uitgevoerde werk tot hun dromen over een andere toekomst, wil Waiting Working Hours het woord geven aan clandestiene arbeiders. Digitale beelden uit de Diksmuidelaan, gemaakt met opnames van Google Street View, vermengen zich met stemmen van de werkers. Samen vormen ze een geconstrueerde dialoog over arbeid en economie, in een veelvoud aan talen. De verstilde wereld van Google Street View lijkt op de stilstand die de werkers ervaren wanneer ze uren staan te wachten. Samen met de arbeiders onderzoekt en bevraagt Waiting Working Hours hun huidige situatie en hun dromen voor de toekomst.
