synopsis

The first scientific expedition in the history of human exploration was launched in 1897. Destination: Antarctica which, for more than 17 centuries, had been nothing but an idea, a presumption, a myth. The Belgica expedition successfully reached Antarctica. One century later, documentary filmmaker Didier Volckaert charts the same course on an icebreaker packed with tourists. Unlike most Antarctica documentaries, White Shadows is not concerned with tales of heroic discovery or ecological disaster. Rather, it is a personal exploration into the human quest for knowledge; an attempt to probe the boundaries between improvement and digression.
La première expédition scientifique de l’histoire de l’exploration humaine a été lancée en 1897. La destination: l’Antarctique qui pendant plus de 17 siècles n’a été qu’une idée, une supposition, un mythe. L’expédition belge atteignit l’Antarctique avec succès. Un siècle plus tard, le documentariste Didier Volckaert retrace le même trajet sur un brise-glace rempli de touristes. Contrairement à la majorité des documentaires sur l’Antarctique, White Shadow ne met pas l’accent sur des récits de découvertes héroïques ou de désastres écologiques. Il s’agit plutôt d’une exploration personnelle à la recherche de connaissance, une tentative d’enquêter sur les frontières entre le progrès et la digression.
